Good afternoon!

Today in class, we discussed different things since 215 is ahead of 208 due to buddies and field day meetings. Here's a quick recap of a few important notes regarding Chapter 8:

- The infancy narratives include some similar, yet different stories.

In regards to Jesus in the Temple, reflect on ALL these questions but select one to reply to this post (please restate the question, with your answer below it). Please read each other's responses.

1. Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom? (2:40, 52)

2. How do you evaluate Jesus' carelessness in not going home with his parents when they left Jerusalem? (2:43-44) Was Jesus at fault or his parents?

3. Why was Jesus so engrossed in the Temple? (2:46-49) How was this interaction with Jerusalem's top teachers important for his own development? How did this represent something that was absolutely necessary for him to do? How did this relate to his calling?

4. Why was it important for Jesus -- and for us -- to grow "in favor with God and men" (2:52)? How is our relationship with people vital to our spiritual growth?

Homework:
1. Complete the top of the chart from the Infancy Narratives worksheet.
2. Watch the short video below for discussion tomorrow. (You do not need to reply to this post). You need to know what "contradict" means ahead of time. Look it up.
3. Reply to this post by Thursday (midnight) reflecting on one of the four questions above.
4. Create a timeline of all the stories from the Matthew and Luke narratives. First, it's best to prewrite/ brainstorm your list before you actually begin charting it so you know the order. Below you will see just three examples of some timelines I found online (not related to the infancy narratives). They are boring and don't include pictures, but the format is for you to get the idea. The fourth example would get extra credit for going over and beyond my expectations. You do not need dates, just the order and labeling of the Gospels.

To get an "A", here's what I'm looking for:

1. All twelve stories from both Gospels (the Canticles, the circumcision, and the geneology do not need to be included).
2. An icon that represents each event (no two icons can be the same).
3. Clear labeling of each story that it either belongs to Matthew or Luke
4. NEATNESS and color! No pencil. God didn't create the world in black and white.
5. A creative and logical format that is easy for the reader to follow the events.
6. All fit on one page.
7. Effort and care.

Here is an online quiz to help you review for this unit. Click here.

I think what he is saying is that Matthew and Luke are both parts of the story. You can't just read one part of it or else you won't get the full story. They both make up one big story. Why didn't the people who wrote the bible just make one book in the bible about John and Jesus' birth. I mean come on can't they make this easier for us to understand. I think God is messing with our heads JK. But for real to have a good story you have to have all of it. No mater what order its in.

Jesus had to "grow" in understanding and wisdom even though He was already the Son of God. He had to because He was a human. Even though He was divine, He was still a human and He didn't know everything right from His birth. God wanted to make Him seem like everyone else. He didn't boast or brag about being the Son of God. He wasn't like a crazy super child that knew everything since he was little. He had to learn from His parents and teachers, just like we do.

The question I picked was #2: What are my thoughts about Jesus not going home with his parents and was it the fault of Jesus or his parents that he was left there?

When Jesus came on this earth he was 100% human and 100% divine. I think this story shows more of his human side. Everone has gotten lost before and it's a very human thing to do. On his divine side though, we usually get lost at a favorite store (for me it was Toys R US when I was little) Jesus got lost at the Temple. This story is really the first sign of him actually knowing he was God's Son. I think it was actually good that Mary and Joseph lost Jesus because he got to tell some people some of his knowledge about God and I think that really impacted those people's lives. Those days he was at the Temple I predict that he was probably very close in prayer with God. This is also good because Mary and Joseph didn't understand what Jesus was saying when he said he was at his "Father's House." I can't imagine how they felt then. This situation isn't anyone's fault. I think this was meant to happen by God. It was for the sake of those religous people at the Temple listening, Mary and Joseph, and of course Jesus.

I picked question number 2. I think it was Mary and Joseph's fault because they didn't realize that Jesus was in the caravan because they taught he was with some one else from the caravan. They should of made sure He was there. Jesus ofcourse was doing the right thing, spreading the good news of God.

Joseph B. 208

I think it is important to grow in favor with God and men because being alone is so boring, dull, and life sucking. If you're alone and away from friends than what now a days people say "you have no life." Without a relationship with God your faith won't be strong and you will never be helped through difficult times.

Jordan H/208

Jesus had to "grow" in understanding and wisdom even though he was already the Son of God. He had to because first he had to learn human things and act like a human.Because God wanted Jesus to seem like a regular person not this maniac who kept braging that he was the son of God.

Anthony Rodriguez 208
2/8/2011 07:32:29 am

Im going to pick question number one. "Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom?" Well, Jesus wasn't like a God or something back then, everyone just knew him as a crazy guy going around and saying he was the son of God. Even though he was still the son of God, he still had to "grow" in understanding and wisdom because he was still a normal guy to us and to evervone else. He ad parents to teach him, feed him, and care for him. Thats why I think even if Jesus was the Son of God, he would still have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom. By the way, great video (:

i think its due Thursday for the project.

for the post: I chose question # 3.

Jesus was so engross to in the Temple because God's presence is so strong there. The interaction with Jerusalem's top teachers is important for His own development because it makes him more knowledgable and His faith with God grows. It represents that He is the Son of God. It relates to His calling by Jesus asking and even answering questions to the teachers.

4. Why was it important for Jesus -- and for us -- to grow "in favor with God and men" (2:52)? How is our relationship with people vital to our spiritual growth?

-It is important for Jesus and for us to grow “in favor with God and men” because if we hurt someone else we are hurting God’s creation which is hurting God. If we do not have respect with others how are we supposed to have a good strong relationship with God? We first must favor God because He is our father, we should not disobey Him. We must show respect, dignity, and fairness with others for they are our brothers and sisters.

-Our relationship with people is vital with spiritual growth because if we do have a struggle, who is there to help us? As we build a bond with other people we are building a stronger bond with God. They are our brothers and sisters, just like here on Earth brothers and sisters may argue and do mean things, but in the end they love and care for each other; this is how it is most of the time on Earth. Without them we are unable to reach our goal which is to have a strong and wonderful bond with God. They push us until we get to reach our goal.

2/8/2011 07:55:13 am

Im going to choose question number two:

I think that Jesus was not careless of not leaving with Mary when they left Jerusalem. I don't think it was Jesus' or his parent's fault. God wanted that event to happen to show that Jesus was His son.

I chose to answer question 1 :

I think that Jesus needed to grow in understanding and wisdom because he wouldn't have been as intelligent as he was if he had not. Also, it is another example of hoe Jesus was 100% human and 100% divine. This is because he could have turned and said he was the Son of God and that he did not need to learn with regular people but he behaved and acted like any normal person would. He went to school, studied, and learned lessons like the rest of us. This is part of what makes him human, not only divine. This helped up to relate to him, and him to us,a little better.

2. How do you evaluate Jesus' carelessness in not going home with his parents when they left Jerusalem? Was Jesus at fault or his parents?

- It was his parents fault because Jesus is not to blaim because he was only a child. But his parents made a mistake, and they forgot like many parents have done. When Jesus was left in the Temple he prayed and talked to the top teachers, he listened and learned, so it wasnt terrible when he was left alone, because when his parents returned for him he had told them they shouldnt have been afraid, because he was safe in his Father's house. Thank You!

1. Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did He have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom? (2:40,52)

Even though Jesus was the Son of God, He had to "grow" in understanding and wisdom because he was a child and didn't understand everything from the moment He was born. Jesus needed to be taught just like all of us do too. This is what makes Jesus both human and divine. Jesus was a normal child that had to learn things to understand them. This is what helps us connect and understand Jesus. The fact that Jesus was humble and didn't brag about being the Son of God is what set Him apart from all the other kings who were greedy and stubborn.

1. "Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did He have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom? (2:40,52)"

Jesus had to "grow" in understanding and wisdom even though He was the Son of God because He was 100% human, too. He still needed an education because He was still a young boy. He had to learn to understand. The only thing that set him apart from us, other than being God's Child, was that He never sinned. Sinning is different than emotions that are human (like Jesus being angry at the Temple when they were using it as a market place). He is also 100% divine. That doesn't stop Him from being 100% human, because if He wasn't we probably wouldn't connect with Him the way we do.

I pick question #2. I think it was Mary and Joseph's fault because you always need to be aware of where your kid is at all times but of course it happens to everybody but they should've checked the caravans even though they thought He was with someone else. DO YOU HAVE TO LABEL IT MATTHEW OR LUKE?

Marlon G 215
2/8/2011 09:20:43 am

I have chosen question number four. The reason it is important to be in favor with God and other is because you need each other for support and for help if you do not under stand the Bible.

Christina F. / 208
2/8/2011 09:25:03 am

I chose question number two:

How do you evaluate Jesus' carelessness in not going home with his parents when they left Jerusalem? (2:43-44) Was Jesus at fault or his parents?

I think neither Jesus nor his parents were at fault. I think what took place, as everything else, was God’s design. God intended for Jesus to be left behind, that way he could spend time in the Temple and be able to talk with the teachers. I also think that Mary and Joseph did not “forget” Jesus, they just thought that Jesus was with his relatives at that time; this was also of God’s making to allow Jesus to spend time in the Temple. Mary and Joseph had a turning point when they found Jesus and he said that he was at his Father’s house. I don’t think that they understood at the time what Jesus was trying to tell them. I am sure that later on, when they understand Jesus’ message, they reflected on what took place at the Temple and were able to understand Jesus’ words that day.

Jonathan S / 215
2/8/2011 09:32:21 am

I have chosen question 2. I think it was nobodies fault. Jesus needed to stay at his Fathers house because God wanted him to grow in faith and wisdom. Also Mary and Joseph made the mistake of leaving Him because there human like all of us.

Lauren G
2/8/2011 09:40:52 am

I pick question number 2. I believe that Jesus staying behind in the Temple is nobodies fault. I believe God wanted Jesus to stay at the Temple and I also believe God wanted Mary and Joseph to "forget" Jesus. Mary and Joseph most likely left Jesus in the Temple because they either thought Jesus was with them in their caravan or they thought He was with another family member.

Tommy B-215
2/8/2011 09:47:44 am

Thanks Mrs.Beadel because at first I was kinda lost. I also chose number 1. I think he needed to grow because if he didn't he wouldn't be as smart he would have been. I also think that if he didn't grow he wouldn't have been as smart with his wisdom. Another reason is he was 100% human that needed education.

Kayla Rodriguez 208
2/8/2011 09:48:09 am

Why was it important for Jesus -- and for us -- to grow "in favor with God and men" (2:52)? How is our relationship with people vital to our spiritual growth?

Well well.. where to begin?
So, as we know Jesus loves us, shows us how to love, blah blah. We get it. Let us examine this and take a closer look, get deeper. God put us on this Earth to love eachother and love Him (by loving eachother we love HIm, it's a win/win). Jesus is our example on how to love, and act. Would you want to befriend somebody who the total opposite of what God wants, but gets to tell you how to act? No, probably not. Jesus was real. Not a hypocrite praying on the street corners to be seen. He wanted you to do something, he did it first, to show and guide us. Also, to make us believe and make him more trusting. If Jesus didn't treat people well, get the favor with God, or just his daily neighbors, who would've followed him? Let's face it, Jesus is too pure and divine to be anything other than what God wants. The dude never sinned. Got to say, he is a pretty good man to look up too.

Our relationships with people is vital to our spiritual growth. Before I get started on that, let's refresh our minds on the meaning of vital.
VITAL –adjective
1. of or pertaining to life: vital processes.

2. having remarkable energy, liveliness, or force of personality: a vital leader.

3. being the seat or source of life: the vital organs.
4. necessary to life: vital fluids.

5. necessary to the existence, continuance, or well-being of something; indispensable; essential: vital for a healthy society.

6. affecting the existence, well-being, truth, etc., of something: a vital error.

7. of critical importance: vital decisions.
I hope you get the point. We NEED good relationships with other people in order to be close with God. THAT'S OUR WHOLE PURPOSE. If not, what was the point of Him sending His son? I think the world needs good slap in the face.
"If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we'd see the day when nobody died"
- Nickleback
I think that said it all. The world would be so amazing and perfect (the way God intended) if we just all loved. Sometimes the things that seem the simplest, are the hardest to do. That's why good relationships with other people are so important.

Danny P./ 208
2/8/2011 10:25:16 am

I'm going to pick question 2. I think it wasn't Jesus' fault because i think it was a message from God telling Mary and Joseph that this is my son.

DO WE HAVE TO LABEL IT MATTHEW OR LUKE?

AND AM I THE ONLY ONE DOING QUESTION 3?

Alejandro D.215
2/8/2011 10:55:47 am

I chose the first question: Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom? (2:40, 52

Jesus had to grow in understanding just like we have to. He did not come with a usb plugged into Him that held everything he had to know. He had to learn everything because He to was human but at the same time he is divine (100% human and 100% divine= 200% of awesomeness).

Alejandro D. 215

o.k. Mrs. Beadel. I was just checking because I know that you like your assingments in pen not pencil.

Alexa C./215
2/8/2011 11:50:45 pm

I chose this question: 2. How do you evaluate Jesus' carelessness in not going home with his parents when they left Jerusalem? (2:43-44) Was Jesus at fault or his parents?

-First of all Jesus was not careless. I don't think He was trying to be careless at all. He knew that He had to stay there because it was His father's house. Jesus was already realizing that He was the Son of God. This was the first account in the Bible that actually shows that Jesus knew that He was the Son of God. He was starting to prepare Himself for what was coming up (His Crucifixion).

-I don't think Jesus or his parents were at fault. It wasn't Jesus' fault because He was just communicating with others in his father's Temple. He thought his parents knew that He was in there. That doesn't necessarily mean that his parents were at fault. They thought Jesus had followed them. They didn't know that He knew that He was the Son of God. So basically it was just a big mistake. So no one was at fault.

1. Since Jesus is the Son of God why did He have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom?
(2:40,52)

Even though Jesus was the Son of God He didn't know everything since birth. This goes back to the theory that Jesus was 100% human as well as 100% divine. He learned, He got angry, and He was just like one of us. This helps us to connect to HIm and picture how hard it was for Him dying on the cross. The biggest difference that made Him different from us is that He did not sin and He always followed God's will.

1. Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom? (2:40, 52)

Jesus still had to grow in wisdom and understanding, even though He was the son of God because Jesus was still human. He was born human and became man. He got mad, hungry, thirst, and got hurt. Jesus was also divine. He performed miracles and was the son of God. Jesus still had to learn because He was still one of us. Like us, He had parents, learn about God, and got angry.

Question 2: I evaluate Jesus' carelessness in not going home with his parents (when they left Jerusalem) as being totally engrossed in something so important to Jesus that he couldn't leave it. (Sort of when I'm in a clothing store that is awesome and I forget the world around me.) I would have to say both Jesus and his parents are at fault. Jesus for assuming they would know where he was at and his parents for thinking he was with the rest of the group. The divine-human mystery that they are all learning as time goes by.

Question 1." Since Jesus already Son of God ,why did he have to 'grow' in understanding and wisdom?

There was a saying that said " To be old and wise you must be young and stupid." I personaly thinks it says it all even though Jesus was never stupid maybe he got mad and did stuff that were just childish, but he was never stupid... I think ?!? Well anyways, GOd wanted Jesus to " grow " because Jesus needed a perspective of how everyone else lived, loved, and grew.Except the reason why everyone loved was because of God. But stil. GOd was 100% human. He needed to be 100% because he had to teach people like. Except if God were 100% human doesn't that kind of make us like 95% because Jesus was always patient, always kind, never bothered. It sounds weird, but sounds true. Maybe it's not but it might be. Oh and God had to make Him 100% human because Jesus had to fellhow it was to be loved to love!!

Every human starts off not knowing anything and then slowly little by little they learn more and more. Its human. Jesus is 100% human and 100% divine. Jesus is suppose to be human and so just like everyone else he starts off not knowing about anything and then learns. Jesus was just like a human being.

Also Mrs. Beadel I wrote something on the blog and I wish that you grade this one.

I pick the first question:
Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did He have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom?

I think that the answer to this question would be that just because Jesus was the Son of God he still is just another human being like us. He did the same things we do today. He still needs to grow in understanding and wisdom like us becuase in order to go and tell the people the good news about God and give miracles to others He needs to learn how to understand God's ways and why. He needs to learn Wisdom to teach others why God does things for a reason. Another reason why He needs to grow in understanding and wisdom is because even though He is the Son of God He still is another human being like us.

I just wanted to add that Jesus is 100% human and 100% divine. Thank you Mrs. Beadel :)

WOW! SOMEONE CHOOSE QUESTION # 3!!! PLEASE! I DONT WANNA BE LEFT OUT! KNOW WHAT? I WONT!
I CHOSE QUESTION #1
JESUS STILL HAD TO GROW IN UNDERSTANDING AND WISDOM BECAUSE HE IS STILL 'HUMAN' HE STILL NEEDS TO "GROW" LIKE US AND UNDERSTAND WISDOM SO HE CAN LEARN GOD'S UNDERSTANDING. WITHOUT 'GROWING' LIKE US, HE WOULDN'T BE AS INTELLIGIENT AS HE IS.

HUMANS NEED TO UNDERSTAND WISDOM. JESUS IS HUMAN. THEREFORE, JESUS NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND WISDOM (DID WE DO AN ASSIGNMENT RELATED TO THIS LAST YEAR???)
JESUS IS 100% HUMAN AND 100% GOD.

I'M NOT SURE IF I HAD THE 100% HUMAN AND 100% GOD RIGHT BUT JUST TO MAKE SURE, I WILL CHANGE IT TO 100% HUMAN AND 100% DIVINE.

DO I GET EXTRA CREDIT FOR ANSWERING TWO QUESTIONS???

Answer to the First Question.

Jesus had to do this because He was human just like us. He had to grow and mature the same way as us. Also God didn't want Jesus to show off about being the Son of God.

1. Since Jesus is the Son of God why did He have to “grow” in understanding and wisdom? (2:40-52)

Jesus had to grow in understanding and wisdom, just because He was the Son of God doesn’t mean He wasn’t a human, He was. He had to grow in learning, just like any other person. He didn’t know everything from when he was born. He is 100% human and 100% divine. He did what any other child did, like being tired or hungry. This helps us connect and understand that Jesus was a normal child. He didn’t go around telling everyone He was the Son of God. He was treated like any other person. Jesus made an impact with the fact that He was kind and not mean like other kings are.

I chose the second one. It wasn't EITHER of their faults. Jesus just wanted to spread the word of God. He IS the Word, and must not be stopped, and CANNOT be stopped. Jesus was, is and will always be one of us(humans) but without sin and being 100% human and 100% divine. I'm sure each of us has gotten "lost" from our parents at least once in our lives. Jesus came down on this very earth to teach us how to love one other and how to respect one another. Jesus was a normal human being and a normal child. He grew up learning about God along with His Jewish Traditions. He knows how we would feel when we are tempted, He even went through that! Believe it or not, Jesus is going with us through the good times and bad times. Jesus knows how we feel, He loves us, He knows us.

i chose question number 1.Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom?

Jesus was son of God which makes him 100% divine, but we have to remember that he was 100% human too which makes him just like us, so he had to grow as humans and he had to learn how to understand like humans. Jesus also had to go through experiences that gave him the wisdom that he had. After all the things that he had to go through he kept loving us and he still does.

I chose question number three.
Why was Jesus so engrossed in the Temple? How was this interaction with Jerusalem’s top teachers important for His own development? How did this represent something that was absolutely necessary for Him to do? How did this relate to His calling?
Jesus was engrossed in the Temple because it was His father’s house. He wanted to spend time with His father. The interaction with the teachers was important because He would be doing this when He was younger. It was preparing Him for His ministry. It was absolutely necessary because it taught others so they can spread the good news of God and improve their teachings. This relates to His calling because He would be teaching others about God’s good new and that’s what He was doing in this story.

1. Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom? (2:40, 52)

Even though Jesus was the Son of God, he needed to grow in understanding and wisdom because he was 100% human. No human is born knowing everything. We go to school to learn. We learn from our parents, family, and friends. We grow in wisdom. He needed to learn and understand what people were doing wrong to correctly get the message across to the people when he grew up. He needed to know what wrong things they were doing to try to correct them. Also, because Jesus needed to grow and learn like us, it is easier for us to connect and relate to Jesus' childhood.

I chose question number one. Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom?

I believe that even though Jesus was already the Son of Man He had to grow in wisdom and understanding because even though He was divine and sinless, He was also human. He was born an infant like we all are. He had to learn to write His name and hold a spoon and as He grew He probably also had to help His parents with everyday things like we do. With learning to do all of these things, He had to learn His religion. Jesus was not born knowing the 10 commandments, He wasn't born knowing how to perform miracles, and He probably wasn't even born knowing He was the Son of God. He also had to grow in understanding and wisdom. As Jesus grew His wisdom for the Jewish faith also grew. He learned the Laws of Moses and prayed. He'd probably spend hours listening to people preach or read books. Jesus learned, because one day He'd be telling us how to live our lives like God would want us to live. He also grew in understanding that (1) not everyone would follow His message. Even though He cared so much about each and everyone of us, we'd just ignore Him and keep living the way we want to because God gave us free will. (2) Jesus also understood that even those who listened to His meassage and tried to change would still sin because we are not perfect. We never have been and we never will be. With time and age Jesus started to understand, some things we do not understand until we are older because they are to complex for our minds to handle. No matter how hard Jesus would've tried there was no way possible that He would know "Yes I am the Son of God. I will give my life up on the cross to save all the people I love from their sins, so that they may be with their Father again." at the age of three. There is a time for everything and as Jesus grew He understood. Just as when we grow we will understand more of how God wants us to be.

I chose question number one. "Since Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom?"(2:40,52)
Jesus was just like us, except divine. He had to go to school and learn from his teachers and parents too. This is another example of Jesus being 100% human and 100% divine. Since Jesus was 100% human He still had to "grow" in understanding and wisdom. Everyone knew Him as just a regular guy walking down the road. He had parents like everyone else. But, Jesus didn't brag about being the Son of God. That is what makes Him different from all the other kings who were stubborn and greedy. This is why I think He would still have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom even though He was the Son of God.

I chose question number one. "Since Jesus was already the son of God, why did he have to "grow" in understanding and wisdom. Just becuase Jesus was divine and the son of God doesn't mean that he wasn't human. He still had to go through what every child has to and grow in understanding and wisdom.

I pick question number 2 ... my opinion is that its Marys and Joseph's fault that he was not with them they should have checked to make sure that he was there it wouldve saved alot of time (-:

I pick question number two. I think that it wasnt Jesus's fault it was Mary and Joseph for leaving Jesus behind. Jesus did the right thing he stayed at his Father's house to learn more about Him. The people were surpised that Jesus knew so much about God. Then Mary and Joseph noticed and turn back to look for

Him.

I picked the first one because eventhough He was 100% divine He was still human like all of us. He went to school like us, He helped his parents like us, He also lived His childhood like some off us do. And it is not like He know that he was the Son of God and he would go around saying hey I am the sSon of God so I am cooler then you. No, He was like anyother child. Just like we slowly understand things as we grow older, He understood things to.
